Where to Ride... by Linda |

The Two Ports
Starting at the Kingston Ferry, take Hwy 104 towards the Hood Canal Bridge. At George's Corner, hang a right towards Hansville then watch for the left turn to Port Gamble. Plan on stopping for a while to enjoy the activities and friendly people. The general store/museum and other art shops are fun to browse through and there is a really good Sunday antique market that is always interesting. For some quiet time and to stretch the ol' legs, walk up to the top of the hill to the pioneer cemetery–not only is it interesting to read some of the history on the tombstones, it will give you some of the best unobstructed views around. When you get on the road again, rather than going the way you came in, just continue through town to Hwy 104 and head across the Hood Canal Bridge. When you cross the bridge, watch for the Port Hadlock sign and take a right to get to one of the most eclectic, down home spots on the Peninsula. Be sure to stop in and browse around at the Port Hadlock Inn. Back at the turn of the century (around 1910) it was an ethyl alcohol plant and it's been converted into a great Inn. The art work is worth seeing, especially the wind works and the décor is very eclectic. Stop for coffee and stroll around the grounds for a real treat. But, make sure to keep dinner open for a stop at the Ajax Café'. It's located on the waterfront in the historic district of (lower) Port Hadlock and you'll be dining in the charming, and maybe haunted, Galster House. The live entertainment on Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday is always good and varied and is a favorite spot for locals. After such a great day, you may want to stay in Port Hadlock for the night–there are colorful cottages that you can stay in for a very reasonable price, right next to the Café or maybe go back to the Inn for a more "present day" atmosphere. If you absolutely have to leave the early 1900's, you can just head on back on Hwy 104 and maybe you'll be lucky enough to see a pod of orcas–or eagles fishing for supper as you wind your way back to the Kingston ferry and back to the 21st century.
